Baptism

Baptism

What is baptism?

Baptism is a public declaration of how Jesus has changed your life. It does not save a person, but is a symbol and celebration of salvation (1 Peter 3:21). In Matthew 3:13-17, Jesus himself was baptized. Baptism is a symbol of your old self dying (going under the water) and the new you being raised to life (coming up out of the water) by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was strong enough to raise Jesus from the dead. After your decision to accept Jesus into your heart, you have that same life-changing power inside you!

Baptism doesn’t save a person; it’s a symbol and celebration of salvation (1 Peter 3:21). The power that brought Jesus back to life is the same power Jesus uses to change our lives – and that’s worth getting excited about!

Should I get baptized?

Why does baptism matter so much? Jesus instructs us to be baptized and set the example by being baptized (Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 1:9). Since Jesus went public about His love for us, we can go public about our love for Him. Being baptized shows that we turn away from a life of sin toward Jesus, the only one who can change us (Acts 2:38-41).

When is the best time to get baptized?

If you have decided to follow Jesus, then the answer for when to get baptized is as soon as possible! Anyone who commits his or her life to following Jesus is ready to be baptized as their next step (Acts 8:12).

Do you baptize children?

As parents, we can help point our children to Jesus, but they are the ones to decide if they will commit their lives to Him (Romans 10:9). Any instance of baptism follows a person’s decision to trust Jesus for his or her salvation and commitment to follow Him (Acts 10:47-48). At Christian City Church, we wait until children are old enough to express their own decision to follow Jesus and understand the meaning of baptism. If your child has already asked Jesus into his life, explain what baptism is and what it means.

Baby Dedications

What are dedications?

Baby dedications are a public dedication of a child to God. Dedications are simply a commitment to God, as parents and as a church family, to surround your child with the love of Jesus.

Should children get baptized or dedicated?

We believe that baptism is for those who have received Jesus as their Lord and Savior. For children who desire to get baptized, we encourage parents to discern whether or not their child is old enough to understand the true meaning and significance of baptism.
